the early years
The operation began in 1951 when Ralph and Vera purchased their first registered polled hereford cattle from C.A. Keith from Harrisville, West Virginia. Later they obtained cattle from Homer Gant of Summerfield, Ohio, and Clyde Banbury of Danville, Ohio. The couple operated three farms consisting of 225 acres. While building and improving the herd, Ralph continued to work in the school system. Over 33 years, he worked as a classroom teacher, coach, and a school administrator. Ralph and Vera had two children: Larry (wife, Donna) and Karen Marks (husband, Bob); three grandchildren: Keith (wife, Tina), Tammy Howell (husband, Kevin), and Kimberly Marks; and five great-grandchildren: Michael and Jonny Ullman; and Latosha, Tyler and Cole Howell.

Ralph was active in various cattle organizations, serving two terms on the board of the Buckeye Hereford Association, including one year as president. During his tenure on the BHA board, Ralph served with hereford breeders such as Bill Nolan, C.E. Knowlton, Horace Karr, and Earl Arnholt. Ralph passed away in 2007. Today, the farm continues to operate under the guidance of Vera, Larry, and Keith.

the farm today

We have made great progress with our cattle since the early 1950s. Outstanding sires used over the years in the operation have included SV 171, Victorious U81, Kiyiwana New Trend, Enforcer 107H, NJW 1Y Wrangler 19D, Remitall Embracer 8E, Boulder, and Wideload. Integrity is the key word in their cattle operation.

We have been showing polled hereford cattle for more than 50 years. Over the past 20 years, they have done particularly well in the show arena. Ralph’s grandson, Keith, has been primarily responsible for the fitting and showing of the cattle. Among the many awards are champions at the Ohio State Fair, West Virginia State Fair, NAILE, Eastern National Livestock Show, and the Ohio Futurity. Recently, the Ullmans were named Premier Exhibitor at the 2005 Eastern National Livestock Show in Timonium, Maryland. In 2010, the Ullmans had the Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the Ohio State Fair and Champion Bull at the West Virginia State Fair and Ohio Futurity, as well as serveral division champion females at these state shows. In addition, the Ullmans have exhibited the past two Grand Champion Females at the West Virginia State Fair.
